My Secrets To Hide The Knots On A Lace Wig

My secret to hide the knots on a lace wig

My secrets to hiding the knots on a lace wig are quick, easy, and smudge-proof. The best part is that it will last all week so you won’t have to worry about anything.

If the top of your wig is made with lace or monofilament material, then you know how annoying it is to see the knots and the base material. Many of us wig wearers feel very self-conscious about the top of our wigs because the knots or lace material doesn’t always look natural or realistic. Below is a quick and easy trick that I learned from the San Francisco Ballet. It's not perfect but it gets the job done and it is a whole lot better than using normal makeup or bleaching the knots on your wig.

Below is a detailed video tutorial that goes over this technique but is super easy, doesn't smudge, and will last you all week! Basically, I learned that the San Francisco Ballet uses this makeup to cover tattoos before performances. I figured if it can cover up a tattoo and handle all the lights, heat, and movement, then it will probably work for wigs. And guess what? It does a beautiful job! Better than anything I have ever tried.

The makeup I used is from a brand called Kryolan; you will need the following products to hide the knots on your lace wig:

  1. Liquid/Mixer: Kryolan.com BIC Activator

  2. Concealer: Kryolan.com Body Illustration Make Up

    • Don't hesitate to reach out to the support team at Kryolan to find the color that closely matches your scalp tone. Your scalp color is typically two to three shades lighter than your face.

  3. Makeup Brush: Kryolan professional angular brush

The application is easy. Using a spray bottle, wet the wig hair and part your hair where you want it. Using a teasing brush, comb the hair and clip the hair back so you can clearly and easily apply the makeup. Then place your makeup brush in the BIC activator. Quickly mix it with the concealer. In the beginning, the makeup will be watery; keep mixing. When the makeup becomes cake-like, it is ready to apply to the lace. Gently apply the makeup over the knots. When you are done, take a wet washcloth, apply makeup toner, and remove any excess makeup that is on the hair. That’s it; your done! Super easy, right!

Now, maybe you're wondering: What is the most realistic wig top?

The most realistic top of a wig is called a "french-drawn top," also known as a "skin top". Basically, what it means is that the wig top looks like real scalp or skin. The knots and grids are not only hidden but the top appears to look like real skin. Typically, "skin tops" consist of three to five layers of material and in the middle, a layer of "glass" silk is added. Some of them have return hairs which add a bit of volume to the top of the wig (my favorite method) and some don't have return hairs, which makes the part line more noticeable because the hair sits flatter.

What is glass silk?

Glass silk is just silk that mimics the look of scalp or skin. There are different shades of glass silk so you want to be sure the wig you want closely matches your natural scalp tone. When done right, a French-drawn top looks unbelievably realistic. Sadly, skin tops remain elusive to many of us due to their extremely high price points.

From my perspective, all women deserve to have a wig with a realistic skin top. I am not sure why it's even an option.

A while ago, I took my kids to a children's museum in Sausalito. I was playing with them in the wave exploration, which is basically a huge water bed. Anyway, I basically got stuck—I couldn't get up or out. This guy noticed me struggling and offered to help; he was standing right above me, and I can't explain to you how uneasy I would have been if I was wearing a lace top wig, even if the knots were concealed. From my perspective, I believe every woman deserves to have a wig with a realistic skin top, which is why I made sure to design/make the top of our No-Slip Silicone Wig to be as realistic as most coveted French-drawn tops. check it out here - it's available in Remy human hair and our luxury synthetic hair. Yes, this is the first ever luxury synthetic wig; it is a modern, beautifully constructed wig that is comfortable, secure, and extremely natural-looking. Yes, I am a bit smitten!
