Encelia's Unprecedented Mission-Driven Manufacturing Initiative
Ethical Hair Company, Encelia
My journey to becoming an ethical hair company wasn't planned, nor is it a marketing tactic. I simply just wanted to make a product that would make life with hair loss easier. But, when I discovered CNN Black Gold article, I stopped all my manufacturing. The enforced labor of the Uyghur community in Xinjiang China is an industry-wide problem that no one wants to talk about! After I learned about it, I knew that I did not want any part of it.
As a manufacture, I had to completely rethink how to source raw materials like human hair, wig materials, and countless other items. It took me almost a year to successfully rebuild my supply chain and during that time I became dedicated to what I now call a Mission Driven Manufacturing.
Encelia's unprecedented, mission-driven manufacturing initiative goes beyond the sourcing of raw material like human hair. Mission-driven manufacturing means looking for ways to help others while making the best possible product. It isn't the easy way to manufacture but in the end we believe it is necessary and it is a core part of Encelia's vaules.
When searching for manufacturers, I learned about the tobacco industry in India and how a large percentage of the female population works in the tobacco industry. The largest hospital in the region, which sees a 1,000/patients a day discovered that 400 of these patients (mostly women) worked in the tobacco industry and were getting cancer along with other illnesses. These women have no other employment options & little education.
Every Encelia wig is handcrafted in a region of India where a woman's only source of income was making tobacco products. Many of these women were getting cancer along with other illnesses.
Encelia wigs are handcrafted by women in our factory in India. The combination of a stable income and a safe work environment provides these women with economic advancement that they would not otherwise have.
✓ Economic Advancement | Encelia provides women in India a stable income along with a safe, non-toxic enviroment.
✓Our factory donates over 200 wigs to the cancer hospital who made the discovery.
